The original deck was very old and no longer served the needs of the clients. It did not fit with the faux rock retaining wall system that was recently installed. They were unhappy with the flow of movement and found the remaining spaces inadequate and chopped up. The interface with the house was causing some of the wall framing to rot.
There were a number of elements that needed to be orchestrated. The clients wanted more space and wanted to drive under it while entering the carport. They wanted a different entry point onto the deck but needed to use the existing concrete stairway below. They wanted the surface to flow into the natural forms of the retaining wall and the extra space that resulted from extending the deck into those spaces. And, lastly, they wanted more resilient materials to last in that sun and weather exposed location.
